What does a robotics technician do?

A robotics technician keeps robots running. Technicians install, test, maintain and repair robotic equipment, whether that is industrial arms on a production line, mobile robots in a warehouse, surgical robots in a hospital or prototypes in a research lab.

It is one of the most practical routes into robotics, and every robot that goes into use needs someone to look after it. Many roles involve shift work or travel between customer sites.

Also advertised as: Robotics maintenance technician, Automation technician, Field technician, Mechatronics technician.

A typical week

  • Planned maintenance and fault-finding on robots and automated equipment
  • Replacing and calibrating parts: motors, sensors, cables and grippers
  • Building and testing robots or sub-assemblies before they are shipped
  • Logging faults and working with engineers on fixes that stop them happening again

Skills employers ask for

  • Mechanical and electrical fault-finding
  • Reading electrical drawings and using a multimeter
  • PLCs and robot controllers (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa and others)
  • Working safely around moving machinery
  • Clear notes and handovers

How much do robotics technicians earn?

  • $27.50 to $44.00 an hour for the middle half, $37.25 in the middle, from 57 roles paid in USD
  • $84K to $130K a year for the middle half, $103K in the middle, from 20 roles paid in USD

These figures come from the 80 of 878 open roles that give pay, taking the middle of each role’s range. Most are in US states where job adverts have to show pay, so they lean towards American salaries; roles in the UK and Europe rarely publish a figure.

What levels are open?

205 of the 878 roles say their level in the title. They split like this:

Entry-level roles are scarce across robotics, not only in this one. I looked at why, and what I’d suggest if you’re starting out, in this article on the entry-level gap.

How to become a robotics technician

Many robotics technicians come in through an apprenticeship, a technical college course or an engineering diploma rather than a degree, and others move across from maintenance, electrical or military technical roles. Robot makers' own training courses are well regarded by employers.

If you are starting out, I'd suggest looking at technician roles at warehouse automation and manufacturing companies, since they hire in the largest numbers and often train people on the job.

If you’re early on, the robotics internships and entry-level and graduate roles are the places to start.
