Robotics careers
a guide to the jobs
Robotics needs far more than robotics engineers. There are 16,482 open roles on Robotics Connected today, at 1,902 employers, from technicians and programmers to software, hardware and machine learning engineers. Each guide below explains what the job involves, the skills employers ask for and how people get in, with live figures on pay, levels and who’s hiring from the companies’ own careers pages.
- Robotics software engineer1,551 open
Software engineers in robotics write the code that lets a robot sense, decide and move, and the systems that support it: simulation, data pipelines, fleet management, tooling and the cloud services behind a deployed fleet.
- Robotics technician878 open
A robotics technician keeps robots running.
- Test engineer510 open
Test engineers find out whether a robot really works before customers do.
- Mechanical engineer418 open
Mechanical engineers design the physical robot: its structure, joints, gearboxes, grippers, housings and the parts that keep it cool and protected.
- Electrical engineer403 open
Electrical and electronics engineers design the robot's nervous system: its circuit boards, power systems, motor drives, wiring and the connections to its sensors and computers.
- Systems engineer381 open
Systems engineers look after the robot as a whole.
- Robotics engineer360 open
A robotics engineer designs, builds and improves robots and the systems around them.
- Machine learning engineer307 open
Machine learning engineers in robotics teach robots from data rather than writing every behaviour by hand.
- Embedded engineer291 open
Embedded engineers write the software that runs on a robot's own electronics: the firmware in motor controllers, sensor boards, battery systems and safety circuits.
- Manufacturing engineer252 open
Manufacturing engineers work out how to build robots, drones and their parts reliably and at a sensible cost.
- Mechatronics engineer246 open
A mechatronics engineer works where mechanical design, electronics and software meet.
- Computer vision engineer225 open
Perception engineers give robots their sense of the world.
- Robotics product manager180 open
Product managers decide what a robotics company builds next and why.
- Controls engineer165 open
A controls engineer makes a machine move the way it is meant to.
- Field service engineer165 open
Field service engineers install, commission and repair robots at customers' sites: hospitals, warehouses, factories and farms.
- Sales engineer112 open
Sales engineers help customers buy the right robot.
- Automation engineer95 open
An automation engineer designs, programs and improves automated systems, very often built around industrial robots: a welding cell, a palletising line, a pick-and-place station or a warehouse sorting system.
- Applications engineer89 open
An applications engineer works out how a robot can solve a particular customer's problem.
- Robot programmer77 open
Robot programmers teach industrial robots their tasks: welding, painting, palletising, machine tending or assembly.
Starting out in robotics
Most robotics roles ask for experience, and entry-level ones are scarce. The robotics internships and entry-level and graduate roles are gathered on their own pages, and technician roles are often the most open to people without a degree. I wrote about why entry-level robotics roles are hard to find, and what I’d suggest if you’re starting out.
