What does a mechatronics engineer do?

A mechatronics engineer works where mechanical design, electronics and software meet. In robotics that usually means the parts of a machine that move: the joints of an arm, the drive of a mobile robot, a gripper, or a production cell where several machines have to work together.

The job is hands-on. Mechatronics engineers design and integrate the motors, sensors, drives and control electronics, write or tune the low-level software that runs them, and test the result until it is reliable enough to ship.

Also advertised as: Mechatronics design engineer, Electromechanical engineer, Actuator engineer.

A typical week

  • Choosing and sizing motors, gearboxes, sensors and drives for a new mechanism
  • Building and testing prototypes on the bench, then improving the design
  • Writing or tuning embedded and control software for actuators
  • Working with suppliers, manufacturing and field teams when a design goes into production

Skills employers ask for

  • Mechanical design and CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion or similar)
  • Electronics: schematics, motor drivers, power and wiring
  • Control loops and some embedded programming, often C or C++
  • PLCs and industrial automation for production-line roles
  • Comfort in a workshop with test equipment

How much do mechatronics engineers earn?

Only 5 of the 246 open roles give pay today, which is too few to give a fair figure, so I've left it out rather than guess. You can see the roles that do show pay on the jobs board.

What levels are open?

98 of the 246 roles say their level in the title. They split like this:

Entry-level roles are scarce across robotics, not only in this one. I looked at why, and what I’d suggest if you’re starting out, in this article on the entry-level gap.

How to become a mechatronics engineer

The usual route is a degree in mechatronics, mechanical or electrical engineering. Apprenticeships and technician roles are a real way in too, since many mechatronics engineers start by maintaining and commissioning machines before they design them.

I'd suggest showing something you have built and made move, even a small project, since it shows you can bring the three disciplines together, which is the whole point of the role.

If you’re early on, the robotics internships and entry-level and graduate roles are the places to start.
