Familiar Machines & Magic is a Boston-area consumer robotics startup founded by Roomba creator Colin Angle, Ira Renfrew and Chris Jones. It emerged from stealth in May 2026 with its first product, the Familiar, a pet-inspired four-legged robot. The Familiar learns household routines, responds to facial expressions and tone of voice, and offers companionship, emotional support and gentle nudges toward healthier habits. It is designed for people who cannot keep pets as well as those who already do. The company develops its own underlying models and hardware for emotionally intelligent physical AI. Data is stored on the device, with the user controlling any cloud sharing. It has offices in Boston, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.
