About the role
MTS: Electrical Engineer - FPGA We are seeking an FPGA Engineer to own the programmable logic in our humanoid robot's electronics. In this role, you will architect, design, and verify RTL for sensing, communication, and control functions, and bring that logic up on the hardware it runs on. You will work closely with electrical and firmware engineers, owning FPGA subsystems end to end, from block diagram and design decisions through timing closure and on-robot validation. This role is ideal for an engineer with strong digital design fundamentals who wants real ownership early and to see their designs running on a real robot. Core Responsibilities • Own the architecture and RTL design of FPGA-based subsystems in the robot, including sensor data paths, high-speed communication links, and real-time control interfaces, from block diagram through implementation. • Make and document key design decisions, including partitioning, clocking, interfaces, and resource trade-offs, and review them with the broader team. • Own verification of your designs: write testbenches and run simulation, close timing, and build in-system debug features so designs can be validated on hardware quickly. • Lead board bring-up and hands-on debug of FPGA-based hardware using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, driving root-cause analysis across logic, firmware, and board. • Work with electrical engineers on FPGA selection, pin planning, clocking, and power requirements, and contribute to schematic reviews. • Design PCBAs, including schematic capture, layout, and bring-up of FPGA-based and supporting boards. • Define and document the interfaces between FPGA logic and firmware/software, such as register maps and data formats. • Contribute to team development practices, including version control, build and simulation automation, and clear documentation. Required Qualifications • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with 2+ years of FPGA or digital design experience (industry experience preferred; substantial internships or research considered). • Strong RTL skills in SystemVerilog, Verilog, or VHDL, with demonstrated ownership of at least one FPGA design from architecture through verification and on-hardware validation. • Hands-on experience taking designs onto real hardware: synthesis, place and route, timing constraints, and on-target debug with Lattice or Intel/Altera tools. • Strong digital design fundamentals, including clock-domain crossing, pipelining, FIFOs, and common interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, and AXI. • Comfort in the lab with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and the ability to read schematics. • Strong ownership, curiosity, and communication, with an eagerness to learn across electrical and firmware disciplines. Preferred Qualifications • Exposure to high-speed interfaces such as Ethernet, PCIe, DDR, or multi-gigabit transceivers. • Experience processing image or sensor data on FPGAs. • Experience with FPGA SoCs and embedded C on the processor side. • PCB design experience, such as schematic capture and layout in Altium, and board-level debug. • Experience with Verilator, or scripted and CI-based FPGA flows. • Robotics or hardware product experience, including student teams or personal projects. Walden Robotics offers a competitive total compensation program, including salary, annual cash bonus, company equity, company-subsidized insurance programs, 401(k) with company match, flexible PTO, daily lunch, and other benefits.
