Prefiro GmbH is a Karlsruhe-based agtech start-up building ASPIRO, a selective harvesting machine for green asparagus. The system pairs AI-driven image recognition with precision robotics and mounts on a tractor or autonomous carrier vehicle. The company was spun out of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Hohenheim in 2023, with roots in automating saffron harvesting. Its modular design is meant to suit farmers' existing equipment and offer a cheaper alternative to manual labour. Three field demonstrations took place in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg in mid-2026, with over 90 farmers trying the machine. Planned expansion includes broccoli from 2028.
